The guitar without a doubt is the most versatile instrument next to the electronic keyboard. The guitar can easy fit into nearly every style and type of music. Learning the guitar is a rewarding accomplishment and to create your own personality on it is way cool. I used to play hard rock and metal guitar in my younger years and now I play guitar for the worship band at North Eastwood Christian Church in Indianapolis. It is the most fulfilling time that I have ever played guitar. To help believers be ushered into the throne room of God as we collectively tell Him that we love Him- it is quite awesome.
I am self taught and I hated the guitar on and off for the first few months I was learning. I expected too much from myself and from time to time the frustration would bring me nearly to tears. Plus I have relatively small hands and it makes it difficult for me to do certain chords and riffs. Now the guitar is to me like a singers voice is to them. It is a very personal thing, an intimate thing, a revealing thing.I do not teach it just musically but I teach it as a sort of an extension of the person playing it. I think it is important to ‘put on’ and prepare to experience the guitar. I have tried teaching folks the guitar in the past and they would quit after 2 or three lessons. They become frustrated. They begin to understand that it takes time (lots) and hard work to be able to rip off leads like Van Halen. They have no discipline, no passion, and they will not sacrifice the time required. So, I decided to teach it from the approach I took when I was a teenager.
As a guitarist starting out there are some things you need to expect. I feel that if you know these things in advance when they do happen they will less likely discourage you. Your fingers are going to get sore and your hand is going to cramp. You are going to get frustrated at times. You will be tempted to utter bad words. This is supposed to happen. All of these will lessen as time goes on. If I could offer any quick advice to a new player it is this- remember the guitar is a thing. You must master it and not be afraid of it. The best guitar to learn on is one that has had the snot beat out of it but still is musically sound. These are the ones you will not be afraid of to be rough with. If you baby the guitar so you will not scratch it you will be preoccupied with that and not learning. If it is new and it is an inexpensive one that you really don’t care if you beat the snot out of it we are in business.
I hope that you will benefit from your time here. It is my prayer that you can see this wonderful instrument for all that it can be and how you can use it to honor God with the talent He gave you! I would also like to invite you to be apart of the Google group called Indy Guitar Club. You can find it by clicking here!
